Maduro: Trump asked twice to meet with me

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said that some US administration employees interrupted his meeting with President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the 2018 United Nations General Assembly meetings.

Maduro stressed that the authorities of his country have been in contact with the current president of the United States during the four years of his mandate.

Maduro added, in an interview with the national media: “Donald Trump wanted to meet with me twice. Once in September 2018, when I was in New York. They contacted us, and the meeting was almost ready, but John Bolton and Mike Pompeo were they prevented it. “

According to Maduro, throughout the four years of the Trump administration, the US and Venezuelan authorities have maintained relations through the envoys of the president and the State Department, as well as through mediators.

Notably, the situation in Venezuela has dramatically escalated after opposition leader Juan Guaidó, whose appointment as president of Parliament was revoked by the Supreme Court, was announced as acting president on January 23, 2019.

The United States recognized him as acting head of state and was joined by the Lima Group, with the exception of Mexico, the Organization of American States, and most of the members of the European Union.

Maduro described what happened at that time as an attempted coup, and announced the severance of diplomatic relations with the United States, while Russia, Belarus, Iran, China, Cuba, Nicaragua, Syria and Turkey expressed their support for him as the legitimate president of the country.
