French President Emmanuel Macron’s office confirmed that the president is pressuring Lebanese politicians to deliver on their promises to form a new government this week and work to lift the country out of its worst crisis.
The Elysee said: “President Macron continues his contacts with various political actors in Lebanon.”
For its part, a Lebanese source indicated that “Prime Minister-designate Mustafa Adeeb is expected to present his plan to form a government to President Michel Aoun on Monday in an effort to speed up the process that usually takes months due to disagreements over the appointment of ministers “.
Macron telephoned the speaker of the Lebanese parliament, Nabih Berri, in an attempt to overcome the hurdle of appointing a finance minister.
Berri said: “The Amal movement opposes the current method of government formation,” referring to the absence of consultations, adding: “I don’t want to participate in it … We will cooperate to achieve stability in the country.”
When Macron visited Beirut on September 1, the Lebanese leadership vowed to form a government of specialists without partisan loyalties within two weeks to end a devastating economic crisis that was exacerbated by the bombing of the port of Beirut on August 4.
