Berri stressed that the negotiations will be carried out under the auspices of the United Nations, noting that the United Nations will act as a mediator between Lebanon and Israel to demarcate the land and sea borders, indicating that the Lebanese army will lead the negotiations.
Berri indicated that the United States will work to create a positive climate for the success of the negotiations that will take place under the auspices of the United Nations.
Berri said the meetings will be held at a United Nations base near the border in southern Lebanon, and the meetings will involve representatives of the United States and the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon.
Berri pointed out that the southern borders will be demarcated based on the positive experience existing since the Understanding of April 1996 and in accordance with Resolution 1701 of the UN Security Council, and with regard to maritime borders, they will be holding ongoing meetings under the auspices of the United Nations Special Coordinator.
He added that once an agreement is reached, it will be signed by Lebanon, Israel and the United Nations force, UNIFIL.
Berri said he had asked French President Emmanuel Macron to pressure French company “Total” not to delay offshore gas exploration in Lebanese territorial waters.
He added: “If the demarcation is successful, then there is a very large scope, especially in regards to Blocks 8 and 9, for it to be one of the reasons (sources) for paying our debts.”
Berri revealed that the agreement was concluded before the US sanctions were imposed on Lebanese ministers, including an aide of his.
