Lebanese President Michel Aoun begins binding parliamentary consultations to appoint a new prime minister, after weeks of disagreements that delayed agreement on a new government and expectations that Saad Hariri will form the new government.
Lebanese President Michel Aoun has started binding parliamentary consultations to appoint a new prime minister, after weeks of disagreements that delayed agreement on a new government.
Saad Hariri is likely to be assigned to take office again during official consultations with the parliamentary blocs, at a time when he may face great challenges in bridging the gap in the Lebanese political arena and forming the new government.
Hariri is expected to receive a sufficient number of votes, unless there are last-minute hurdles. Following his participation in the consultations, former Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced the nomination of Saad Hariri to form the government and said after his meeting with President Aoun: “Today I had the honor of meeting President Michel Aoun, and I appointed him officially Hariri to be the head of this new government, hoping that all efforts will be united to ensure the success of its work, and to form an effective government capable of carrying out the necessary reforms to restore confidence internally and internationally.
Lebanese Parliament Deputy Speaker Elie Ferzli announced Hariri’s nomination, saying: “The compelling reasons that dictated that I had to stand on this rostrum a year ago to say that my candidate is Hariri still exist today. Coexistence, in the hope that a government will be formed that will achieve the objective in the process of establishing Lebanon.
Former Prime Minister Tammam Salam said: “I expressed to President Michel Aoun my support for Hariri’s candidacy, and he faces a great challenge, and this is one last chance. Either to stop the collapse or to go to the worst.”
In turn, the Al-Wafa resistance bloc announced yesterday that it did not appoint anyone to form the next government.
Deputy Muhammad Raad said in a speech on behalf of the bloc: “Like you, we will not get tired, we will not get bored and we will not despair. And because we see that national understanding is the mandatory step to preserve Lebanon, and because the success of the The political process in the country and the achievement of Lebanon’s interests in general depends on this understanding. ” We did not appoint anyone to form the government. “
Hariri ran as a candidate to form a new government that could implement the roadmap outlined by French President Emmanuel Macron, to implement reforms that will pave the way for the release of foreign aid that Lebanon desperately needs, warning of an internal war at a time when the country is mired in the worst financial crisis since the civil war. In a televised interview, he had confirmed that he was the natural candidate for prime minister.
The President of the Lebanese Republic, Michel Aoun, decided to postpone the binding parliamentary consultations until today, after it was scheduled for last Thursday, “at the request of some parliamentary blocs, due to the appearance of difficulties that require work to resolve them”, according to the presidential statement.
Aoun must choose the candidate who has the most support from the parliamentarians, to form the new government that must face a serious economic and financial crisis, in conjunction with the outbreak of the new Corona virus, and the repercussions of the explosion in the port of Beirut in August, which killed about 200 people.
