The dispute is between Israel and Lebanon over an area of about 860 square kilometers in the Mediterranean.
In 2018, Lebanon signed the first contract to explore for oil and gas in its waters, including a territory in dispute with Israel.
In 2019, the Israeli government announced that it had agreed to hold talks with Lebanon, mediated by the United States, to resolve the existing dispute over the maritime borders.
