Parallel to the pressure exerted by the Lebanese Forces party on the smuggling file, since last week, President Michel Aoun chaired a meeting of the Supreme Defense Council yesterday, in the presence of Prime Minister Hassan Diab and the ministers and members and leaders of the security services, and devoted himself to presenting the security situation in the country and the measures that should be taken to combat smuggling operations through illegal border crossings, in addition to issues related to public mobilization.
Aoun began the meeting by presenting the reality of illegal border crossings in the countryside and the legal terms and scope of the impact of the smuggling of goods and materials on public finances, and did not demand complacency on this matter, and emphasized the need to take maximum measures against violators.
Prime Minister Hassan Diab presented the financial and economic repercussions on treasury revenues, as well as the logistical obstacles that impede control of land borders.
After Army Commander General Joseph Aoun presented the field reality of land borders and the status of illegal crossings, ministers and leaders of military, security and customs agencies discussed the difficulties preventing border control. , and it was decided to intensify monitoring and prosecution, and tighten and apply sanctions against violators. It was also decided to develop a comprehensive plan to establish military, security and customs control centers.
