The Lebanese Minister of Works in the interim government, Michel Najjar, revealed that in the port of Beirut there were 52 containers of hazardous materials that had not been removed, due to the lack of obtaining the necessary financing for it.

Najjar said in a statement after a meeting held by President Michel Aoun to discuss the conditions of the port of Beirut after the explosion occurred on August 4, “Some issues related to the port of Beirut were discussed first and some materials dangerous flammable substances present in it and in some Lebanese regions “.

He added: “I have submitted a request from His Excellency the President to obtain exceptional approval to allocate part of the World Bank loan to finance the removal of hazardous containers at the port, and the media has reported on 52 containers of hazardous materials.” and the packing process ended more than a month ago, and we keep looking. The ball is from one side to the other, because financing for this operation has not yet been secured, so the containers are still in the port. “

He continued: “I requested that part of the amount allocated to the Ministry of Works be used to remove the rubble (from the port), which can represent a danger, especially in the summer season, because it contains many materials mixed together, and there is a French company which is conducting a study to remove this debris. “

He noted that President Aoun emphasized that this issue is very basic and that any material that may pose a danger should be discarded as a result of any fire or any accident that may occur as a result of these containers or debris.
