Middle East: Lebanese media quoted Major General Abbas Ibrahim, the director general of Public Security in Lebanon, as saying that he went to Damascus after his visit to Washington, as part of an effort to free American journalist Austin Tice, who is believed to be is being held in Syria.
Ibrahim told “Al-Jadid” channel that he visited Damascus for two days, and that he was in regular contact with Tice’s mother to inform her that he would continue to work on her son’s “archive”.
The channel quoted Ibrahim as saying, “I will not stop working on this issue, and his mother promised, whom I met more than once in Washington, and is in constant contact with me by phone.”
US President Donald Trump had embraced the case of Tice, a freelance journalist and former US Marine Corps officer, who disappeared while practicing his journalism in Syria in 2012. Abbas said his visit to Damascus was It came about after he visited Washington last month, where he met with national security adviser Robert. O’Brien.
A Trump administration official confirmed an Oct. 18 news report that a White House official had traveled to Damascus this year to hold secret meetings with the Syrian government seeking the release of Tice and another American citizen.
The visit was the first time a high-ranking US official met the government of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria in more than 10 years.
