Lebanese-Israeli UN military meeting: “an opportunity for great strides”

The Chief of Mission and Force Commander of UNIFIL, Major General Stefano Del Col, today chaired an extraordinary tripartite meeting with senior leaders of the Lebanese Armed Forces and the Israeli Army at the United Nations site in Ras Naqoura, where the meeting was held in miniature due to restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Discussions during the meeting focused on the situation along the Blue Line, air and ground violations, as well as other issues within the scope of UNIFIL’s mandate under UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
Major General Del Col emphasized the importance of the tripartite forum, as a mechanism designed to reduce tension, prevent any misunderstandings between the parties and find solutions. “We have a unique opportunity to make significant progress on contentious issues along the Blue Line,” he said.
He added: “I would like to ask you to go beyond what we have achieved and complete the work on the hot spots, as encouraged by UN Security Council Resolution 2539.”
Major General Del Col commended the parties for the constructive role they played in defusing tensions along the Blue Line and said: “I would like to congratulate the efforts of both parties after my repeated calls for proactive measures. and a change in the prevailing dynamics in terms of tension and escalation. The continuation of this positive dynamic will greatly facilitate constructive engagement between the parties on outstanding issues. “
It should be noted that trilateral meetings have been held regularly under the auspices of UNIFIL since the end of the 2006 war in southern Lebanon and are an essential mechanism for conflict management and confidence-building.

The Lebanese side condemned the continuing fires set by the Israeli enemy on the borders and reaffirmed its commitment to UN resolutions, especially Resolution 1701 and all its components, and highlighted the need for the Israeli enemy to withdraw from all territories. occupied, including: the adjacent areas north of the Blue Line, the Shebaa Farms, the Kfarshouba Hills and the district. He reaffirmed the need to include the occupied B1 point in future UN reports and decisions, as well as the rest of the previously mentioned occupied territories.

The Lebanese side, through UNIFIL, demanded to receive the maps of the fortifications that the Israeli enemy had established during the occupation, and the Lebanese army and UNIFIL found one of them on 04/24/2020 on the outskirts of the town of Ghajar.
