On Thursday, the Lebanese army announced that it had found 4.35 tons of ammonium nitrate near the entrance to the Beirut port, indicating that units of the Engineering Regiment were working to treat it.

The Guidance Directorate of the Lebanese Army stated, through a brief statement: “At the request of the Beirut Port Customs Detachment, the Army Engineering Regiment inspected 4 containers at the customs detention post outside the port near Entry No. 9, and were found to contain a quantity of nitrate. The ammonia weighs around 4 tonnes and 350 kg, and units from the Engineer Regiment are working on it. “

Lebanon seeks to overcome the repercussions of a large explosion that rocked the port of the capital, Beirut, following a fire that hit a warehouse containing 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, killing more than 170 people and injuring another 6,000 with the destruction of entire neighborhoods of the city in a few seconds.

Beirut was declared a disaster zone, while the city witnessed angry protests over the explosion that prompted Prime Minister Hassan Diab’s government to resign.

Earlier on Thursday, Beirut Port Management and Investment Director General Basem Al-Qaisi revealed that there are containers with flammable materials in the port, adding that he addressed a letter on this matter to customs and the Lebanese army, which tried to keep them safe.

On August 24, the Lebanese army announced that its personnel, in cooperation with experts from France, had found 79 containers containing “dangerous” materials in the port of Beirut.
