Lavrov stresses to Bourita the importance of avoiding escalation in Western Sahara

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed to his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, the importance of restraint and of ensuring that the ceasefire enters into force in Western Sahara.

In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Lavrov discussed with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita in a phone call the most pressing issues on the international and regional agenda, with a focus on the latest developments in the Middle East and North of Africa, especially Western Sahara.

“In view of the escalating situation in Western Sahara, Lavrov called on the parties concerned to exercise restraint and abide by the ceasefire regime and resume the negotiation process under the auspices of the United Nations,” the statement said.

The two sides affirmed their firm position on the need to resolve all disputes through political and diplomatic methods exclusively and through a comprehensive national dialogue without external interference.

The two ministers emphasized the need to continue coordinating international efforts to bring the positions of the Libyan factions closer together in a way that serves for the formation of unified institutions of government based on the results of the Berlin Conference and Security Council Resolution 2510. from the ONU.

The two ministers also reviewed the most important directions of bilateral cooperation, coordination in foreign policies and the development of ties in the areas of finance, business and humanitarian exchange.

Lavrov and Bourita expressed satisfaction that their countries will continue to implement the strategic partnership declaration adopted in 2016.
