Dmitry Peskov, the Russian president’s press secretary, denied any connection to the agreement to stop the war in Karabakh with the accident that Azerbaijani forces mistakenly shot down the Russian helicopter that preceded the agreement.
“Work on the deal started long before the helicopter crash,” Peskov said.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced the signing of an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, stipulating an end to the war in Karabakh from 10 November and sending a Russian peacekeeping force to the region.
A Russian Mi-24 helicopter was reportedly shot down from the direction of Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan, on November 9.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the helicopter was escorting a convoy to a Russian military base in Armenia and was hit by a portable missile, fired by Azerbaijani forces, causing damage to the helicopter, killing two of its crew and injuring to a third party.
Azerbaijan acknowledged its responsibility for the accident and Aliyev apologized to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, and Azerbaijan opened an investigation into the accident and announced its willingness to compensate the Russian side.
