US President Donald Trump said he intends to remove Sudan from the list of state sponsors of terrorism after the Khartoum government deposited $ 335 million in compensation for American victims of terrorism and their families, and Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok confirmed the transfer of the funds.

Trump added in a tweet on Twitter that he would remove Sudan from the list of state sponsors of terrorism once the amount was deposited.

“The new government of Sudan, which is making great progress, agreed to pay $ 335 million to American victims of terrorism and their families. Once the amount is deposited, I will remove Sudan from the list of countries sponsoring terrorism. Finally, justice is for the American people and a big step for Sudan! “

Previously, Reuters quoted US officials today as saying that the Trump administration is in the process of agreeing with Sudan to remove it from the US list of countries that sponsor terrorism, and that the announcement could be made in a few days.

One official said: “The agreement may mark the beginning of Sudan’s moves towards establishing diplomatic relations with Israel, following similar steps in recent weeks by the UAE and Bahrain, mediated by the United States.” The source added that details are still being worked on.

For his part, the head of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of Sudan, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, said that Trump’s decision to remove Sudan from the list of countries sponsoring terrorism confirms the change in Sudan.

Meanwhile, Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok said that ranking Sudan on the terrorist lists had cost his country a lot and seriously harmed it.

Hamdok added that Khartoum is seeking Trump to formally notify Congress of Sudan’s removal from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.

He indicated, in a tweet, that Trump and the notification he will send are the strongest support for the transition to democracy in Sudan and for the Sudanese people.

He explained that Sudan is close to shedding the heaviest legacy of the dictatorial regime, as he described it. He said that he asserts that the Sudanese people are a peace loving people and have never been a supporter of terrorism.
