The Israeli army announced on Tuesday that it had found a tunnel dug from the Gaza Strip leading to Israeli territory, and Israel considered this tunnel a violation of its sovereignty and held Hamas responsible.
Jerusalem: An Israeli army spokesman, Jonathan Conricus, said in a conference call that a tunnel spanning tens of meters, dug in Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip, leading into Israeli territory, had been detected in an area within from Israeli territory through an underground sensor system installed near the security fence it had installed. The Hebrew state and separates it from Gaza.
The spokesperson emphasized that the tunnel did not cross the fence, stating that it does not present risks to Israeli areas and will soon be destroyed.
However, he deemed it a “violation of Israeli sovereignty”, adding that about 20 tunnels have been found in Gaza since the summer of 2014.
“At this time, we do not know which terrorist organization dug the tunnel,” Conricus said, adding: “But we hold Hamas responsible for every activity emanating from the Gaza Strip.”
The Gaza Strip has been controlled since 2007 by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), which Israel classifies as a “terrorist” organization.
Since then, the Hebrew state has imposed a strict blockade on the Gaza Strip.
Hamas and Israel have fought three wars since 2007.
