The world barely breathed a sigh of relief with the appearance of positive signs on the Corona issue when vaccination campaigns began in various countries of the world, until they returned and a black cloud appeared that caused a state of panic. Experts have indicated that there is a new strain of the emerging corona virus that has appeared in Great Britain and in several countries, such as Denmark, the Netherlands, Australia and others, according to the World Health Organization, although not all countries have been confirmed. In addition to the countries in which the British strain appeared, another strain appeared in South Africa, provided the relationship between them is determined. After the occurrence of this mutation and the appearance of the new strain, the experts confirmed that it is characterized by a rapid spread of 70 percent compared to the basic strain that was first known to the virus.
When British Health Minister Matt Hancock confirmed in a televised interview that the virus had spiraled out of control after causing high rates of infection and hospitalization, fears of this official statement increased the severity of the situation. The UK had reimposed restrictions on London and other areas as part of efforts to control the situation, fearing this new widespread spread of the virus after it was able to spread more rapidly.
Other European Union countries have resorted to strict measures regarding flights from Great Britain. As for the Netherlands, it was the first country to impose an immediate ban on flights from Britain, while other countries, such as Belgium, Austria, France, Italy, Bulgaria and Switzerland, are moving to take similar measures. As for Ireland, it will impose a 48-hour embargo, while Germany has stopped all flights from Britain, with a few exceptions. Turkey also suspended flights from Great Britain, the Netherlands and Denmark, and Iran suspended flights with the United Kingdom for a period of two weeks. The same applies to Morocco and Kuwait.
For its part, Canada announced that it would impose a 72-hour ban on flights from Great Britain starting today. Noting that the World Health Organization had asked European countries to tighten restrictions with the appearance of the new strain, which may be more widespread and affect diagnostic methods.
Today, according to experts, it seems that the only solution to control the situation is to harden social distancing and limit social contacts, especially in areas where tension appeared and that are considered risky.
Is it the most dangerous new strain?
So far, there is no data to indicate that the new sentence could be more dangerous or increase deaths, even if it is more widespread, it seems.
According to Dr. Rola Hasni Samaha, a specialist in bacterial diseases from the Lebanese American University Medical Center-Rizk Hospital, this new strain is not considered new in every sense of the word. The Corona virus has always been known to be susceptible to a genetic mutation all the time, not at this particular time. While this genetic mutation can sometimes translate into a practical change in inflammation associated with the virus, it may sometimes not affect it, as has happened in recent months and even today. According to Samaha, the changes in the virus have increased in such a way that the current strain of the virus has become completely different from the original strain in which the virus began to spread around the world about a year ago.
What does the new breed look like?
What seems clear, according to Samaha, is that the new strain of the virus is considered more transmissible and more widespread than with the original strain. The virus has become more widespread and powerful, which explains the large increase in the number of cases in which the strain appeared.
With regard to Lebanon specifically, here the question arises as to whether this new strain could be present in it and affect it as well. Samaha clarifies that the fact that Lebanon is open and its borders are not closed can inevitably lead to this tension from any of the countries of origin in which it appeared. There is no obstacle and nothing can avoid it. Consequently, if an expat comes from other countries where the strain appears while carrying Viron, it can spread if the infection is passed on to residents. In countries that are open to everyone, it is difficult to exclude the idea that a strain is transferred from one country to another at any time without prior notice, even if this strain has not yet existed in Lebanon. Therefore, the neighboring countries of Great Britain were prepared to impose restrictions or to stop the flights coming from Great Britain.
At the same time, Samaha does not confirm that this necessarily means that the tension will shift to Lebanon and that we will face problems related to that, and there are no expectations on the matter.
As for the vaccine, experts say, he said, that the vaccine is expected to show an effective response to this new strain, which requires speeding up the mass vaccination process to control the situation and this rapidly spreading new strain of the virus.
