Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has confirmed that his country will not renegotiate the nuclear deal if Joe Biden wins the US elections.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said his country will not renegotiate the 2015 nuclear deal if the Democratic candidate wins the US presidential elections, Joe Biden, which are scheduled for Tuesday.
“If we wanted to renegotiate the nuclear agreement, we would have done it four years ago with the president of the United States, Donald Trump,” Zarif said in an interview with the US channel “CBS” on Monday night.
Trump announced the U.S. withdrawal from the nuclear deal in May 2018 and reinstated sanctions on Iran.
Zarif added: “We can find a way to re-engage, but re-engage does not mean renegotiation. Rather, it means bringing the United States back to the negotiating table.”
The head of the Iranian diplomatic apparatus added: “The sanctions have hurt Iran, but they have not brought about the kind of political change that the United States and its president, Trump, want.”
Zarif considered that “what matters to Iran is the behavior of the United States and not the promises and slogans of the presidential candidates”, noting: “What matters to us is how the White House acts after the elections, not promises or slogans” .
He continued: “If the United States decided to stop its destructive behavior against Iran, the situation would be different, regardless of who is posted in the White House.”
Iran hopes that Democratic candidate Joe Biden can win the presidential election and lose Donald Trump. With the aim of mitigating the impact of the sanctions on Tehran and returning to the negotiating table.
