Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday that his country was pleased with the “rhetorical” rhetoric on the nuclear deal and was seeking to take effective action.
This came during Khamenei’s speech at a virtual conference for the people of Tabriz, capital of the province of West Azerbaijan (northeast), on the occasion of the anniversary of his uprising against the Shah of Iran in 1978.
Khamenei said Iran will take action on the nuclear deal, officially known as the “Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action” (JCPOA), only when it sees other parties taking action as well, according to the official Iranian news agency IRNA.
He added: “We have heard many good words and promises regarding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, and we have also seen violations of it, and the words and promises are meaningless.”
The Supreme Leader explained, “This time, there must be real action. If we see the other party taking action, we will do the same,” emphasizing, “We have established this condition and we will not back down.”
In the same context, President Hassan Rouhani said during a meeting of his government on Wednesday that Tehran will withdraw from the additional protocol to the nuclear agreement, which grants special inspection permits to facilities, on February 23, but will not expel the country. inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency.
In May 2018, Washington withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal between Iran and the 5 + 1 group, which includes Russia, Britain, China, the United States, France and Germany, and imposed economic sanctions on Tehran.
The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, is scheduled to visit Tehran on February 20.
The French Foreign Ministry also announced talks between European powers and the US Secretary of State on Iran on Thursday.
