Iran considered that the United Nations ban on importing and exporting conventional weapons was lifted “automatically” as of Sunday, according to Security Council Resolution 2231 and the agreement on Tehran’s nuclear program.
In a statement posted on Twitter, Iranian Foreign Minister Muhammad Javad Zarif said that as of today, “all restrictions on the transfer of arms and related activities and financial services to and from Iran, and all prohibitions related to entry or transit through the territories of the member states of the United Nations. The imposition on a number of Iranian citizens and military officers was automatically rescinded.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry emphasized in the statement that it does not see a place for weapons of mass destruction in its defense strategy, noting that the lifting of the arms embargo will allow Iran to import and export weapons and conduct financial transactions related to that. in accordance with their defense policies.
He also made clear that the end of the arms embargo on Iran is automatic and does not require a new declaration or resolution from the UN Security Council.
According to the ministry’s statement, Iran can, from Sunday, secure any weapon or equipment it requires from any source, without legal restrictions and depending on defense needs.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry stated in its statement that “we will not recognize the imposition of financial, economic or energy restrictions and weapons,” and explained that Iran depends on itself in defense and does not see any need to buy weapons because it hopes to lift the arms embargo.
He also considered that United Nations member states are bound to enact their laws and regulations by the decision to lift the arms embargo on Iran despite Washington’s efforts to undermine Tehran’s interests in the deal, calling on the United States to abandon its destructive approach to Resolution 2231, noting that “Washington must return to compliance Fulfilling its obligations under the Charter of the United Nations, and to stop acts that violate international law, ignore international order and avoid instability in western Asia.
It should be noted that the date October 18, 2020, was set to lift the embargo according to the nuclear agreement signed by Iran in 2015 with the main powers, including the United States, Great Britain, France and Germany, and the legal framework by which Resolution 2231 of the Security Council was established.
The United States withdrew from the agreement in 2018 and reimposed severe economic sanctions on Tehran. He tried to extend this embargo, but the members of the Security Council opposed it.
The lifting of the embargo, imposed by the Security Council since 2007, allows Iran to buy and sell conventional weapons, including tanks, armored vehicles, fighter jets, attack helicopters and heavy artillery.
