She added: “France is reminded of its continuous action for human rights and equality between women and men.”

The ruling against Al-Hathloul also angered the United States, as Jake Sullivan, national security adviser in President-elect Joe Biden’s administration, criticized the ruling against the Saudi activist, describing it as “an unfair and disturbing trial.”

The United Nations, in turn, denounced the decision, and the United Nations Human Rights Office expressed concern about the decision of the Saudi judicial authorities, calling on the Kingdom to release it as soon as possible.

Earlier on Monday, local media and family sources reported that a Saudi court specializing in terrorism cases sentenced Al-Hathloul to 5 years and 8 months in prison, in a trial process that led to international condemnation.
Al-Hathloul, 31, has been detained by Saudi authorities since May 15, 2018, after she was arrested along with at least 12 women’s rights activists.
