The protesters called on the French president to apologize and withdraw his statements to the world’s Muslims, who carried banners with cartoons depicting the French president’s face as a “devil” (and reading “Macron is the real terrorist”).
They also waved Islamic banners and demanded the expulsion of the French ambassador in Jakarta and a boycott of French products.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo condemned the two attacks on France and also condemned Macron’s statements, describing them as “insulting to Islam” and “damaging the unity of Muslims everywhere.”
Today, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs convened the French ambassador to discuss these statements.
It is worth noting that Macron’s remarks in recent weeks have enraged Muslims, especially after describing Islam as a “faith going through a worldwide crisis”, and his strong defense of publishing cartoons insulting the prophet. Muhammad, in the context of what he considered freedom of expression.
