The Indian government is holding a new round of talks with the leaders of thousands of farmers living on the outskirts of New Delhi after two months of protests over the repeal of new farm laws that they say threaten their livelihoods.

The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged farmers to end their protest against the laws enacted last September, but farmers say they will not give in to their demands as they believe the laws favor private sector buyers to farmers expense.

Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said the government will hold talks with farmers with an open mind. So far, previous rounds of talks have failed to calm the tens of thousands of farmers who have camped outside the capital New Delhi for nearly two months.

Farmers threatened to intensify their protests with a march to Delhi on January 26, as India celebrates its Republican Day.

Last Tuesday, India’s Supreme Court ordered an indefinite moratorium on the implementation of the new farm laws and appointed a four-member committee to hear farmers ‘objections, but farmers’ union leaders said they would not appear before the commission.

On Friday, the main opposition party in Congress will organize protests in state capitals to support the action of farmers.
