Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan in Moscow reviewed their countries’ positions on the situation in Libya, Yemen and the Gulf, highlighting the cooperation and partnership between the two sides.
At a joint press conference in Moscow on Thursday, Lavrov highlighted his country’s interest in rapprochement between Iran and the Gulf states and reaching an agreement through dialogue.
He expressed his hope that these efforts will continue, which he said will be incorporated into the project presented by Russia to ensure navigation in the Gulf and build trust among the countries of the region.
The Russian minister welcomed efforts to launch what he described as a constructive dialogue with the Houthis in Yemen, and asked to identify the party responsible for the recent bomb attack at the Aden airport, along with the arrival of members of the newly formed Yemeni government from Riyadh.
Regarding Libya, Lavrov said that his country supports a comprehensive peace process there with the participation of all parties.
On the other hand, the Russian foreign minister indicated that cooperation between Russia and Saudi Arabia contributes to the stability of energy markets.
Iranian interventions
For his part, the Saudi Foreign Minister stressed the importance of confronting Iranian activity in the region, and highlighted the need to stop Iranian interference that hampers efforts to end the conflict in Syria.
At the joint press conference with Lavrov, Bin Farhan said that the solution to the tension in the region is in Tehran.
He stressed that his country supports the achievement of peace in Yemen and Libya through dialogue, accusing the Houthi group of disturbing the peace in Yemen.
The Saudi minister said he spoke with his Russian counterpart about Gulf security, and explained to the Russian side the importance of confronting what he described as Iranian interference that destabilizes security and stability in the region.
Bin Farhan highlighted the importance of the strategic partnership between Saudi Arabia and Russia to support global stability.
