The death toll from the huge explosion caused by a gas leak that destroyed a building in the center of Madrid this Wednesday has risen to four, after a priest died at night from serious injuries, authorities announced religious this Thursday morning.
The 36-year-old priest was among the 11 injured, who were announced on Wednesday after the explosion that destroyed a building owned by a parish and where priests live on a street in the Spanish capital.
The Archdiocese of Madrid said in a statement that this young priest “was transferred to the hospital due to his injuries” and died there “shortly after 1:30 in the morning.”
Two men walking down the street and a worker making repairs to the building’s central heating were also killed in the blast, authorities said, initially mistakenly announcing that an 85-year-old woman was among the victims.
He also announced the loss of a person, who eventually turned out to be one of the dead.
For its part, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry stated that a Bulgarian man is 47 years old.
The blast destroyed six layers of the building in the La Latina neighborhood, while debris spread over vast areas, and the building’s facade was completely destroyed by the force of the blast.
