The bodyguard of the British Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab, was relieved of his operational duties after leaving his pistol on a plane at London’s Heathrow Airport, according to the BBC.
A cleaning worker was reported to have found a “Glock 19” pistol tucked into its holster on a seat on a United Airlines flight after landing in London on Friday.
The Foreign Secretary was in Washington, DC, to speak to American politicians about Brexit.
Scotland Yard police said an internal investigation was underway.
The newspaper “The Sun” reported that the cleaning agent sounded the alarm after the weapon was found and police boarded the plane, before realizing that the weapon belonged to one of Rapp’s personal protective teams.
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: “We are aware of the accident that occurred on a flight to the UK on Friday 18 September and we are taking this matter very seriously.”
He continued: “Since then, the bodyguard in question has been removed from his operational duties pending an internal investigation into the circumstances.”
The newspaper “The Sun” reported that the officer took out the folder and placed it on his seat before escorting the chancellor off the trip and leaving him behind.
Nick Aldworth, the former head of the Metropolitan Police Department, told the BBC that there are strict rules about handling firearms, but that human error does occur.
“This kind of thing is not common, but it happens … It happened because humans are present in the system and sometimes they work under tremendous pressure, especially when conducting armed operations,” he told the Today show.
He continued: “It appears this represents an unfortunate misstep for which the officer will pay a price in his professional life as he has been removed from his operational duties, which is something he would love to do.”
In February, the bodyguard of former Prime Minister David Cameron was investigated for leaving his weapon in an airplane bathroom. In that incident, a passenger found the weapon on a British Airways flight from New York to London.
