Yesterday, the President of the Lebanese Republic, Michel Aoun, appointed Prime Minister Saad Hariri to form the new government, after parliamentary consultations in which Hariri obtained 65 votes, compared to 53 deputies who did not name anyone. Among the most prominent blocs that did not vote for Hariri were “Hezbollah”, the “Free Patriotic Movement” and the “Lebanese Forces”.
Following his assignment, Hariri stated his intention to “form a government of nonpartisan specialists” whose task would be to “implement the economic, financial and administrative reforms contained in the French initiative document, which the main blocks of Parliament pledged to support the government through implement “, indicating that it would focus on” forming a government quickly; Because time is running out and the opportunity against Lebanon is the only and the last one. “
The speaker of parliament, Nabih Berri, indicated after his meeting with Aoun and Hariri that “an optimistic atmosphere” between them and “the training will take place earlier than expected” and “there will be a rapprochement between (the Future Movement) and (the Free Patriotic Movement) “. Hariri is consulting today with the parliamentary blocs to find out their position on the formation of the government.
And in the first American reaction to Hariri’s appointment, Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs David Schenker said yesterday that any new government must commit to implementing reforms that lead to better economic opportunities and end corruption.
Schenker stressed that his country will continue to impose sanctions on Hezbollah and its allies and those involved in corruption, regardless of government formation and border demarcation negotiations.
