Beirut – The head of the Hamas political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, confirmed that the Palestinian camps in Lebanon will remain a symbol of stability and cannot interfere in Lebanese internal affairs.
This came during a meeting between Haniyeh and Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri on Wednesday in Beirut, and statements by the head of the Hamas political bureau appeared to be an attempt to reassure the Lebanese interior, especially with the escalation of sectarian tension between Sunnis and Shiites in this country, which seems on the brink of financial and economic collapse.
The last few days have witnessed skirmishes between Sunnis and Shiites in the Khaldeh area, south of Beirut, which brought to mind memories of the dark civil war in this country, in which the Palestinians were a major party.
“We confirm that our Palestinian people living in Lebanon are a guest of Lebanon and reject any form of settlement or displacement,” Haniyeh said, emphasizing that “the camps will always be a symbol of stability.”
He added: “During this meeting, we again expressed our solidarity with Lebanon, especially after the Beirut port tragedy, and we emphasized that the pain and pain that Lebanon was subjected to was also echoed in Palestine and the Palestinian people and with our Palestinian people who live here in the camps in the land of brother Lebanon. “
He noted that the discussion also addressed “the political developments that the Palestinian issue and the region in general are going through, especially the agreement of the century, the annexation and normalization plan, and the agreements that are now being concluded between some Arab countries and the entity”.
He noted that the meeting touched on “the meeting of the general secretaries of the Palestinian factions, and we reviewed the events that preceded this meeting, and our aspirations for its success, and we are determined to make the meeting, which is held after a long period of interruption, especially here in Lebanon, the castle of resistance and the reservoir of the Palestinian revolution. “
Haniyeh is currently visiting Lebanon, leading a Hamas delegation, to attend the meeting of the factions, scheduled for Thursday in Ramallah and Beirut simultaneously, with the participation of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, to discuss confrontation with the plan of Israeli “annexation”.
Haniyeh is likely to meet with several Lebanese leaders during his visit, amid talks about the possibility of his meeting with Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah. According to the latest census of the Lebanese Central Bureau of Statistics for the year 2017, 174,422 Palestinian refugees live in Lebanon, in 12 camps and 156 localities.
