United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urged Armenia and Azerbaijan to “resume negotiations under the auspices of the co-chairs of the Minsk Group” to reach a “peaceful and lasting solution” to the dispute over the Karabakh region. .

According to a statement released on Friday, Guterres “encourages the governments and peoples of Armenia and Azerbaijan to follow the path of dialogue to establish regional peace, stability and prosperity.”

The statement also indicated the readiness of the United Nations to meet the humanitarian needs of the affected peoples in Karabakh as a result of the recent conflict, and requested the full cooperation of the parties to ensure “free access” for the delivery of aid.

Guterres’ statement comes a day after a joint statement by the United States, Russia and France, countries that participate in the presidency of the Minsk Group of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, reaffirming the importance of this body, at a time when Turkey demands a new form of negotiation to be part of it.

For its part, Azerbaijan called for France to be excluded from mediation after the French Senate voted on a text calling for “recognition” of Karabakh.

The Minsk Group was established in the nineties of the last century after the first war between Armenia and Azerbaijan and is in charge of mediating in the case of Karabakh, the unilaterally declared republic with an Armenian majority and which is part of the territory of Azerbaijan.
