This came during a video message sent by Guterres to the Virtual Conference in Support of Lebanon organized by France, the day before yesterday, in order to mobilize international assistance for Lebanon to confront the results of the explosion of the port of Beirut, which caused the death of some 193 people and hundreds of wounded, and the destruction of many facilities and places of character. Heritage.

During his message, the Secretary General highlighted the reform, recovery and reconstruction framework developed by the World Bank in cooperation with the European Union and the United Nations, indicating that those affected by this explosion have not yet received adequate responses, even four months later. of the explosion.

The Secretary General stressed the importance of assessing the situation in Lebanon and pointed to the effects of the “Covid-19” pandemic, which caused Lebanon, as elsewhere, to aggravate the already fragile economic and financial situation.

For his part, the Lebanese president, Michel Aoun, yesterday signed a law aimed at providing compensation and pensions to the families of the victims of the Beirut port attack.

Yesterday, Aoun stressed that the international community, which is following the reform process in Lebanon, must be calm.

“Reform is my battle since 2005, and this was repeated in 2009, and adherence to criminal financial auditing is an important and fundamental basis for this reform,” he said during his meeting with the British Secretary of State for the Middle East and Africa. North, James Cleverley.

Aoun presented “the difficulties that Lebanon faces, including the repercussions of the Syrian war on it, and the displacement of more than one million and 800 thousand Syrians to Lebanon, and its impact on the various Lebanese sectors.”

He reiterated his “call for the need to support the international community for the return of displaced Syrians to safe areas in Syria,” emphasizing “the need to provide assistance to Syrians in their country, to encourage them to return.”
