Turkey’s decision on Monday to return the drillship to the eastern Mediterranean off Greece threw oil on the fire again, after relative calm last week culminating in a meeting between the two countries’ foreign ministers , for the first time since the crisis began last August.
Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dand Yas harshly criticized the Turkish actions, saying they undermine stability and peace in the region, Al Arabiya’s Brussels correspondent reported.
He also considered that Ankara today represents the common denominator among all the crises in the region, referring to the eastern Mediterranean and the interventions in Libya and the Nagorno Karabakh region in Azerbaijan, in addition to Syria.
He stressed that Turkey’s behavior violates international law and the decisions of the European Union statements, which previously confirmed its support for Greece and Cyprus in their dispute with Turkey over exploration rights in disputed areas in the Mediterranean.
In addition, the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, called the European Union, after having made a phone call with the President of the European Council, and informed him of the forwarding by Turkey of the drillship, highlighting that this step is a dangerous escalation by part of Turkey.
He also informed him of his intention to present this unilateral Turkish measure at the council meeting on October 15-16.
