Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri said on Friday that efforts to form a government of specialists “have not been successful so far.”
This came in a statement he made after his meeting with President Michel Aoun, at the Baabda Palace, east of Beirut, broadcast on local satellite channels.
Hariri said: “I consulted with the President of the Republic, and I will complete the consultation and explain to him the golden opportunity we are in, and each team is responsible for their positions from today.”
He added: “My position will not change by forming a government (non-partisan) of 18 ministers (…) and it has not yet advanced.”
Hariri said: “During my visit to France, I was enthusiastic about training the Lebanese government of specialists to carry out reform tasks.”
In turn, the Lebanese Presidency affirmed, in a statement published on its Twitter account, that President Aoun had received the designated prime minister at his request, and consulted with him on the issue of the formation of a government after his tours. last abroad.
He affirmed that “the appointed president did not contribute anything new at the governmental level”, without further details.
On Wednesday, Hariri met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris to discuss internal Lebanese difficulties facing government formation and possible ways to overcome them.
And recently, there have been frequent reports from the Lebanese media, calling for Aoun to make “concessions” to form the government, which has been stalled since Hassan Diab’s government resignation, 6 days after the catastrophic explosion in the port of Beirut, last August 4. .
On October 22, the Lebanese president appointed former Prime Minister Saad Hariri to form a government, following the apology of his predecessor, Mustafa Adeeb, for the failure of his mission to form a government to succeed the Diab government.
Two months later, Hariri announced that he had presented Aoun with a “cabinet made up of 18 ministers of non-partisan specialists,” but the latter announced his objection to what he called at the time “Hariri’s uniqueness in appointing ministers, especially Christians, without in agreement with the presidency “.
For more than a year, Lebanon has suffered the worst economic crisis since the end of the civil war (1975-1990), and a strong political polarization, in a scenario in which the interests of regional and western countries collide.
