Geagea’s words came during a meeting with various representatives in the European Parliament, and Geagea stressed that “the main problem in Lebanon is the ruling elite that is made up of Hezbollah and the group of President Michel Aoun”, considering that “in times of crisis, we have to describe things as they are. In order to find solutions “.
Geagea added: “The crisis began about a year and two months ago, and despite the enormity and severity of the situation and the misery in which the Lebanese people live, nothing has been done, and this is unnatural and illogical in circumstances. You are the Europeans, although you have thousands of problems on your hands, try everything possible. ” Helping solve the Lebanese crisis while our ruling elite does nothing. The most prominent example of what I am saying is French President Emmanuel Macron, who has visited Lebanon twice in this regard in the past, and sadly will not be able to make his third visit due to his infection with Corona disease, and here I will take advantage of this. opportunity for I wish him a speedy recovery, as we see that the ruling elite in Lebanon did not spend so much time benefiting the Lebanese people. “
Geagea stressed that “we have only one solution to the crisis, since we consider that we cannot get anywhere with this ruling elite, since it has led the country to the abyss. It cannot do anything other than what it has done. That is why we ask that we don’t waste any more time and go directly. ” To the only solution, which are early elections, especially after the change of mood in the country after October 17, 2019, which made this ruling elite lose its legitimacy. Today we can only say that it is legal, but this is one thing and legitimacy is another ”, noting that“ the majority Currently, Parliament resists any attempt to hold elections, either early or within the constitutional date.
In response to a question about what the European Union can do in these circumstances, Geagea said: “You must put all the necessary pressure on the ruling elite to push them to go to elections where the European Union can unite and declare clearly and firmly that it will stop. to deal with any party of the ruling elite parties unless early elections are held in Lebanon. “
In response to a question about the problem of Syrian refugees in Lebanon, Geagea said: “We can no longer tolerate the presence of 1.3 million Syrian refugees on our lands, especially after our economic conditions have deteriorated, and the The only possible solution to this problem is for Russia, in cooperation with the European Union, to establish a zone. It is safe within the Syrian territories on the border with Lebanon, where Moscow is securing these areas, and this will not be a big problem for him in light of the capabilities he has in Syria, while the European Union builds small temporary villages. for refugees, and once the preparation is complete, the refugees are transferred to this large camp if it is allowed to speak, as the United Nations continues to provide them with help, as they do today in Lebanon, if we want to reach a real solution to the problem of the refugees in Lebanon, given that although they want to return, they will not do so in light of the continued rule of the Assad regime. .
Regarding the Beirut port explosion, Geagea noted that “a local investigation into this explosion is underway, except that every time it hits an obstacle and there are many obstacles blocking its path and path. For example, a few days ago the judge summoned the head of the interim government. ” Hassan Diab and other ministers, to hear their testimonies in the case of the port explosion, but they refused to appear before him. Therefore, I do not believe that any local investigation can reach the truth, considering that the port explosion is a very big crime and not just a simple mistake. “
Geagea added: “This crime has claimed 200 dead and 200 permanently disabled, in addition to 6000 injured and tens of thousands of homeless people. The only possible solution to reach the truth is that we have an international investigation committee that will be formed by the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, so that we can obtain a similar committee. One of the permanent members of the Security Council should send a letter to the Secretary General requesting him to form this committee. “
Geagea emphasized that “knowing the truth is a very important issue for the Lebanese people because it will give them some hope and belief that there is still something present here with them. Today they have neither hope nor faith in this ruling elite, so of course they will have no faith in the investigation. ” The local man is involved in this crime, so if he can help us in this matter, this matter in itself will be a great achievement. “
In response to a question, Geagea said: “The ruling elite in Lebanon does not want an investigative committee to investigate the crime of the Beirut port explosion, for the simple reason that most state officials are responsible for a form or another of the port explosion and can be prosecuted for this explosion, and for this reason. Specifically, they do not want to go towards an international investigation, but we and most of the people want this to know the truth that we have no hope of reaching except through an international investigative committee, and I believe that France can ask the Secretary General of the United Nations to form a similar committee, and that is why I sent a message to President Macron. Two months ago I asked him to do it. This is something that does not need to be voted on by the Security Council.
Regarding what the European Union can do in these circumstances to help the Lebanese people, Geagea said: “We thank God that, despite the Corona pandemic, Europe continues to prosper. It can do a lot for the Lebanese people as a people, who can be helped humanely through international and European institutions such as the World Food Organization “. Or the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank or the French Development Agency to name a few, and I will take this opportunity to send a big thank you to the French government, which helped French-speaking private schools in Lebanon with $ 15 million at the beginning of this academic year, as well as Lebanese students at French universities. So you can help us on the humanitarian level and we urgently need you. It can also provide money for development projects through international or European institutions. “
