France on Wednesday voiced its concern about the interference of international parties to the conflict in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, noting that Turkey is “militarily” interfering in the conflict together with Azerbaijan.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly: “What is new in the matter is the presence of a military intervention by Turkey, which may lead to fuel the internationalization of the conflict,” according to Agence France -Presse.

Le Drian explained that France is pushing for talks on Nagorno-Karabakh to take place in the coming days.

He indicated that the talks will be held in Geneva on Thursday and in Moscow on Monday in an attempt to persuade warring parties in the region to agree to negotiate a ceasefire.

He also noted that France, Russia and the United States will hold these talks to “start a dialogue without preconditions.”

The Nagorno-Karabakh region, an Armenian separatist enclave within Azerbaijan, on the border with Iran, is witnessing fierce fighting between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces.

French President Emmanuel Macron recently condemned what he described as the deployment of “Syrian fighters from jihadist groups” in Nagorno Karabakh who, according to French intelligence, passed through Gaziantep (Turkey). I have not publicly responded to the charges.

The French Chancellor regretted that “there has been a large number of civilian casualties to achieve slight advances in the territories by Azerbaijan, since it was Azerbaijan that started the conflict.”
