US Deputy Attorney General John Demers told a news conference: “Washington has indicted eight people involved in an illegal operation with Chinese devices on US soil known as” fox hunting. “
Demers added that “the fox hunting has been described by China as an anti-corruption campaign, but in fact it is aimed at opponents of the Communist Party, opponents of President Xi Jinping and critics of Beijing.”
While Washington arrested five Chinese, the other three are believed to be in China.
The US Justice Department said it was “working to stop Beijing’s threats to Chinese living in the United States.”
FBI officials said that “China’s actions cannot be expected from a responsible country.”
The officials added at the same press conference that “there are cyberattacks against US citizens from China.”
On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo denounced the Chinese communist government, calling it a “predator,” during a trip to strengthen relations with Sri Lanka, which recently received massive investment and diplomatic support from Beijing.
