Lebanese President Michel Aoun chaired an economic, security and judicial meeting on Monday at the Republican Palace of Baabda, during which it was decided to assign the security services to arrest all people who violate the cash and credit provisions and the law that regulates the currency exchange profession, whether they are licensed or unlicensed money changers who practice speculation.
Today’s meeting coincided with popular movements and road blockades in several Lebanese regions, to complete a series of protests that began a week ago, in opposition to the high dollar exchange rate and the deterioration of living and economic conditions, in the face of disability. of the governing authority to manage the crisis.
He left the meeting decisions to assign security services to complete the shutdown of local illegal electronic platforms and groups that determine the prices of the US dollar against the Lebanese pound, and continue communication to that end with official international bodies and platforms based on current international laws.
It was also decided to assign the ministries and security agencies concerned to work to control the use of foreign exchange, except for commercial, industrial or health sector purposes, in order to guarantee the basic requirements of citizens.
The President of the Republic called on the security services to reveal the plans established to harm the country, especially after information became available on the presence of external organizations and platforms that were working on the liquidation of cash and the situation financial state.
Acting Prime Minister Hassan Diab considers that “the platforms that manipulate the dollar exchange rate are political and not financial. Therefore, their real objective is not to fix the exchange rate on the black market, but to aim to destroy Lebanon affecting the social and living Reality to incite people and push them to go out on the streets ”.
Diab said: “Although these platforms do not actually reflect the dollar exchange rate, they have become a reference for money changers, as well as for traders of various types of goods.”
In this context, Imad Kreidieh, General Director of the Ogero Authority, announced in a series of tweets via Twitter, that “Ogero informed today the judicial authorities interested in the file of blocking of websites, applications and pages on social networks, and those interested in determining the exchange rate of the US dollar against the national currency on the black market, which we were able to block websites, while technically we could not block the applications and pages on the Google Play and Facebook service without blocking them completely.
Ogero is the executive hand of the Ministry of Communications and constitutes the basic infrastructure of all communication networks.
For this reason, we suggest, in order to avoid the greatest repercussions on public and private institutions as a consequence of the total blockade, that the judicial authorities formally write to the two companies, in accordance with the established norms, to request that they eliminate these requests and pages for violating laws and judicial decisions, “Kreidieh added. All judicial decisions are made with the maximum technical capacity and as allowed by law.”
Economists believe that the competent authorities in Lebanon continue to hold empty meetings and go around in a vicious circle, instead of solving the root of the problem.
Experts believe that many attempts have been made to chase the platforms, but they have not been successful, and the dollar exchange rate continues to rise and will remain so, even if all applications are stopped, because the only solution is in the return of the flow of cash dollars to Lebanon, which is combined with the formation of a new government.
