The Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot said on Sunday that unknown assailants infiltrated a munitions depot at an army training base in the northern Negev and seized more than 93,000 rounds.

He added that the robbery took place last week at the National Army Training Center near a kibbutz (a cooperative farm) called Taslim, a sprawling camp that has seen dozens of gun thefts over the past decade.

And there is talk of one of the largest ammunition thefts in the history of the Israeli army, involving more than 93,000 5.56mm rounds, according to the same source.

To break into the ground forces’ ammunition warehouse, the thieves took advantage of several security flaws in the protection system and learned about the security measures in place in advance.

Within minutes, hundreds of boxes of ammunition were loaded into the cars, in preparation to be sold for millions of shells in Israel’s crime market, according to the same source.

So far, no suspects have been arrested in the case, in light of the possibility that the thieves have received assistance from within, according to Yedioth Ahronoth.

For its part, the occupation army said that an assault on an ammunition depot in one of its bases (south) was discovered during which ammunition was stolen, and the Military Police has opened an investigation into the circumstances of the incident, and at term of which the results will be presented to the military prosecutor.

During the last years, the military bases of the occupation army witnessed dozens of thefts of arms and ammunition, especially in the south.
