Azerbaijan and Armenia agreed to a ceasefire in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, starting at 12:00 noon local time.

The Russian Foreign Ministry declared, in a statement issued by itself, in the early hours of Saturday, that “Azerbaijan and Armenia will initiate, with the mediation of the co-chairs of the Minsk Group of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and based on the basic principles of settlement, substantive negotiations with the aim of reaching a peaceful settlement as soon as possible. ” .

The two sides stressed that the exchange of prisoners and other detainees and corpses must begin immediately after the entry into force of the agreement in Karabakh, with the mediation of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

In a related context, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed: “There will be an agreement between the two parties to the conflict in Karabakh on the terms of the agreement and with precision.”

The agreement between the two parties came as a result of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s call on the parties to the conflict in the Azerbaijani region of Karabakh occupied by Armenia to halt the fighting on humanitarian grounds.

A statement from the Kremlin confirmed that Putin held a series of telephone conversations with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Putin pointed out “the need to stop the fighting in the region to exchange prisoners and corpses.”

And the Azerbaijani army managed in recent days to launch attacks that led to the restoration of control over several areas in the Karabakh region.

Since 1992, Armenia occupies about 20 percent of Azerbaijani land, which includes the “Karabakh” region and five other provinces in the west of the country, in addition to much of the “Aghdam” and “Fadhuli” provinces.
