Erdogan responds to Macron’s statements on Islam
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned French President Emmanuel Macron’s statements on “Islamic isolationism” as a provocation, accusing him of “crossing all borders.”
Erdogan said in a speech in Ankara: “Macron’s statements in which he asserted that Islam is facing a crisis is a clear provocation that goes beyond mere disrespect.”
It appears that Erdogan’s statements about the need to “liberate Islam in France from external influences” in his October 2 speech appear to have particularly upset Erdogan.
The Turkish president added: “Who would think of himself to talk about freeing Islam from outside influences? It’s rude and it goes beyond all limits. “
The bill to combat “Islamic isolationism” in France adds to a long list of disputes between Macron and Erdogan, who regularly defend Muslim minorities around the world.
Erdogan advised the French president to “be careful when speaking about unfamiliar topics.”
“We hope to see him act as a responsible statesman and not as a colonial ruler,” he said.
