Election of Raya El Hassan to assume the presidency of the Board of Directors of Bank of the Mediterranean

SAL announcement of Banco del Mediterráneo “In light of the election of a new board of directors for the bank, Raya Hafar Al-Hassan was elected to assume the presidency of the board of directors, and Michel Akkad was appointed to take over the executive direction of the bank ”, explaining that“ Hassan’s appointment and the contract comes from October 9, 2020 and for the period of the newly elected board, which ends by holding the ordinary annual general meeting that will be convened to consider the accounts of the bank for fiscal year 2022.

“These appointments reflect the commitment of Bank of the Mediterranean and its shareholders to ensure that the bank is prepared to face current economic and financial challenges in a difficult operating environment, adopting a renewed strategic approach that contributes to strengthening the bank’s balance sheet”, it said in a statement. He emphasized that Al-Hassan’s solid experience in the financial and banking sectors, and his ability to work in difficult circumstances, as well as his deep knowledge of the bank and the “Bank of the Mediterranean” group (because he held the position of director independent of the bank and of each of the members of the board of directors of “Mediterranean Investment Bank SL and Saudi Lebanese Bank (SAL) since 2011), and will play an active role in guiding the bank during these critical moments.

The bank noted that “Al-Hassan has a distinguished track record and experience in the field of public finance and economic reform, through her appointment as Minister of Finance in Lebanon (November 2009 – June 2011) and assuming the Presidency of the Administrative Authority of the Special Economic Zone in Tripoli.
(May 2015 – January 2019), in addition to holding advisory positions at the beginning of his career with the Presidents of the Council of Ministers and with the Minister of Economy and Trade. Al-Hassan was appointed Minister of the Interior and Municipalities (January 2019 – January 2020).

He mentioned that Al-Hassan has a BA in business administration from the American University of Beirut and an MBA with honors from George Washington University, and in 2019 he received an honorary doctorate in human arts from the American Lebanese University. He is an honorary doctorate in business administration from the Arab University of Beirut.
