Disappointment in Germany with Biden’s shares

Der Tagesspiegel reported that “European countries, especially Germany, have eagerly awaited Washington’s return to foreign and security policy cooperation after Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential elections.”

The German newspaper stressed that “this did not happen after Biden assumed power in the United States.”

According to the newspaper, the hopes that the German federal government had placed in Joe Biden were not fulfilled. As an example, he mentioned: “Before the first personal meeting between the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and the German Heiko Maas, Washington issued an important statement on Afghanistan without coordinating it with its allies.”

Berlin was also disappointed, following another step taken by the US authorities after the meeting between the two ministers.

For its part, Blinken asked to stop the works on the “Northern Torrent-2” gas pipeline, and did not rule out imposing more sanctions to prevent its completion.

The newspaper noted, “This is exactly what former US President Donald Trump threatened to take,” noting that “even German opponents of the pipeline are categorically opposed to US sanctions that cross regional borders.”

In context, Blinkin repeated on March 23 the White House opposition to the construction of “Northern Torrent-2” and called for work on it to be stopped. He explained that “the construction of the gas pipeline contradicts the energy objectives of the European Union and undermines the security of Ukraine and other NATO and European Union partners.”
