The Portuguese prime minister announced that he will allow the local soccer league to resume its closed-door activities in late May, under the plan to facilitate procedures for the complete closure imposed due to the # Corona virus.
Antonio Costa told reporters that the First League and the Portuguese Cup final are “the only exception” to the plan that will keep other professional sports pending.
Costa added that the resumption of the season, suspended since mid-March, is linked to the approval of the health authorities on the protocol of the league and the selection of stadiums that meet its criteria.
With 10 stages remaining at the end of the league, Porto leads the standings, one point behind champion Benfica, while Braga and Sporting are in third and fourth place respectively, 14 and 18 points behind the leader.
Porto will face Benfica in the cup final, which is expected to be postponed to a new date, after it was postponed from its deadline on May 24.
The suspension of the season had serious financial repercussions for the league and the clubs, as one of the main sponsors of the tournament intends to suspend its quotas for the first and second class clubs.
Sporting Club’s fragile financial situation resulted in its players’ wages being reduced by 40 percent, and has put most of its employees on partial unemployment since mid-April.
