Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer accused Republicans Thursday of “poisoning” democracy by refusing to acknowledge that Joe Biden had won against Donald Trump in the Nov. 3 presidential election.
“Republicans in Congress deliberately cast doubt on our elections because they fear Donald Trump,” the senator said during a press conference in Washington. Congress is conspiracy theories, they deny reality and poison the well of our democracy. ”
While a handful of Republicans were quick to acknowledge the victory of a Democratic candidate, such as Senator Mitt Romney, many others either remained silent or publicly supported allegations of electoral “theft” of the outgoing president.
Chuck Schumer of Congress said: “This morning I have a very simple message for Republican senators: the elections are over. The (results) have not been close. President Trump has been defeated. Joe Biden will be the next President of the States. United”.
The Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, participated in the press conference, asking for the approval of the voting results. “Now the people have voiced their opinion, Joe Biden has won and Camala Harris will be the first female vice president of the United States,” he said.
Trump still refuses to acknowledge his defeat, in a historic break with American political traditions, which would complicate the transition period for Biden, who is supposed to take office on January 20, 2021. Trump’s refusal also represents a “serious threat to national security. ” More than 150 senior US officials warned on Thursday in a message revealed by the “Politico” website.
Signatories, from both parties, include former Republican Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and former head of the National Security Agency and the CIA, Michael Hayden. In their letter, they demanded that Biden have access to information “necessary to attend to urgent matters of national security, such as the daily report” that the president receives on threats to the United States and the world. The letter is addressed to a Trump administration official, Emily Murphy, who, as the director of a government agency specifically responsible for the transfer of power, must formally acknowledge that Biden is president-elect, so that her transition team can begin to receive confidential information and meet with teams across the board. Ministries
Biden acknowledged Tuesday that he still could not access the daily reports assigned to the president. “This may be useful, but it is not necessary,” he said, because he had not yet held his position.
