On Thursday, the Lebanese authorities decided to extend the period of “general mobilization”, until the end of March 2021, given the increasing number of infections with the Coronavirus and the escalation of the economic crisis in the country.

This was done in a statement by the Supreme Council of Defense of Lebanon, which includes the top leaders of the state, and is headed by the country’s president, Michel Aoun, after a session held at the headquarters of the Republic, east of the capital, Beirut.

According to the statement, “the general mobilization period has been extended for a period of 3 months from 1/1/2021 to 03/31/2021, and the necessary sums have been allocated to achieve (provide) the vaccines against Covid 19 (Corona) that have been requested by the Ministry of Health “.

The “general mobilization” includes the closure of prayer centers (mosques and churches), sports centers, popular markets, outdoor and indoor playgrounds, public parks, sidewalks and public beaches, according to a previous statement from the Interior Ministry.

For the past two weeks, Lebanon has witnessed a complete shutdown due to the growing Corona outbreak, but last Monday, the country gradually reopened.

However, early Thursday, the interim government Health Minister Hamad Hassan warned of the increase in the number of Corona infections and the lack of sufficient hospital beds.

As of Thursday night, Lebanon had registered 132,776 corona cases, including 1,67 deaths, according to the Health Ministry.

During the meeting, President Aoun said that “current circumstances dictate some expansion in conducting business (for the government that resigned), to meet the needs of the country and citizens until the next government is formed.”

The Crown pandemic and its repercussions have increased the suffering of the country, which is going through the worst economic crisis since the end of the civil war (1975-1990), which caused a financial collapse and a deterioration in the value of the national currency.

For his part, Interim Prime Minister Hassan Diab said that “the prestige of the state is still present and effective, and that the military and security services can be firm in imposing the application of laws and procedures.”

Regarding the Beirut port explosion and its disastrous repercussions, the Supreme Defense Council requested “an extension of the mandate of the Lebanese army, in coordination with the Beirut governorate, to continue with the implementation of some (unspecified) tasks within from the Beirut port area after the explosion. “

The council also decided “to assign the Minister of Finance (Ghazi Wazni) to seek to secure the appropriation of (funds) in the amount of 150 billion Lebanese pounds (one dollar = approximately 1518 Lebanese pounds) to distribute restoration aid to those affected by the Beirut port explosion “.

On August 4, the Lebanese capital spent a bloody night, as a result of a large explosion in the port of Beirut, which left some 200 people dead and more than 6,000 injured in addition to massive material damage.
