Britain began its mass vaccination campaign against the emerging corona virus on Tuesday, based on the vaccine produced by the US companies “Pfizer” and German “Biontech”, to become the first country in the world to take this step.
According to the British network “Sky News”, the government has established a priority list for the groups that will receive the vaccine first, especially those inmates in nursing homes.
The Joint Vaccination Committee of the Government of Great Britain announced its priority list for the first phase of launching the vaccine, which was as follows:
1- Residents of the nursing home and their caregivers.
2- All people aged 80 and over, health and social assistance workers who work on the front line.
3 – Any person who has reached 75 years of age or more.
4 – All people over 70 years of age and very vulnerable patients.
5 – Any person who has reached 65 years or more.
6- All people between 16 and 64 years old who suffer from chronic diseases that make them more vulnerable to serious illnesses or death.
7 – Any person who has reached 60 years or more.
8 – Any person who has reached 55 years of age or older.
9- Any person who has reached the age of 50 or more.
The committee also mentioned that there are two groups that will not receive the vaccine, namely pregnant women and most children under the age of 16.
The Intergovernmental Committee on Vaccination stated that “it is not recommended that pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant within 3 months be vaccinated, because there is no data on its safety for them.”
The committee also said that the vaccine will not be generally available to children because most of them will develop a mild infection without symptoms and therefore will not need a vaccine, but will be given to young people with serious illnesses.
Despite this, Sir Simon Stevens, executive director of the National Health Services Authority in Great Britain, warned of difficulties in delivering the vaccine to those who need it, as “it must be stored at a low temperature (-70 degrees Celsius) and it can only be transported a few times, in addition to the size. The packages mean that they cannot be divided safely at this stage and therefore cannot be delivered to doctors and pharmacists through normal distribution channels.
Stevens noted that nursing homes will have the bulk of the vaccination and, with more doses available, it will be given to other risk groups.
Most of the population at risk is expected to be vaccinated between January and April.
Studies have shown that the “Pfizer” and “Biontech” vaccines are 95 percent effective and work for all age groups, and although two doses are needed for maximum benefit, there is evidence of partial protection against the disease. 12 days after the first dose.
