The UK reported to the World Health Organization that the spread rate of the new strain is “70% stronger” than the previous strain.
In the past, SARS-CoV-2 mutations have been observed and reported worldwide.
The government’s scientific adviser, Patrick Vallance, had indicated that this new strain, in addition to its rapid spread, had also become the “dominant” form of the virus after it caused a “sharp increase” in cases requiring hospitalization in December.
Britain’s chief scientific adviser said the new strain of the Corona virus is likely to be present in other countries as well.
“We believe that it may also be present in other countries,” Valance told reporters. “Maybe it started here, we don’t know for sure.”
And he considered that Covid-19 vaccines seem appropriate to stimulate an immune response to the new strain of the virus.
Belgium will suspend flights and train traffic from Britain from midnight on Sunday (23:00 GMT), after the new strain of the virus was discovered in part of the British territory.
In a statement to Belgian television “VRT”, Prime Minister Alexandre de Crew said that the suspension period would be at least 24 hours.
Germany is considering banning flights from Britain and South Africa to prevent the spread of the new strain of the virus, according to a government source.
The source noted that, like the Netherlands, where a ban on all flights from the UK has come into effect, the German government is considering taking a similar step as a “serious option” regarding flights from Britain and South Africa. .
