French government scientific adviser Arnaud Fontane said on Friday that the novel Corona virus is spreading faster than during the outbreak for the first time in the spring, in one of the strongest warnings yet about the extent of the spread of the disease in Europe.
“The virus is spreading faster … the pandemic reappeared in August,” Fontaneh, an epidemiologist, told BMF television, adding that the battle against the disease will be “very long.”
He spoke a day after France registered a record number of 41,622 new cases of Covid-19 disease, bringing the total number of cases of the disease in the country to close to one million, and France will overcome this barrier, on Friday, to become the second western European country after Spain.
Like many other European countries, which are facing a further increase in the number of cases since the beginning of September, France tightened restrictions to contain the disease and announced, on Thursday, the extension of the curfew, which was initially imposed in 9 cities, including Paris, to cover more than two-thirds of its population.
Fontaneh said French authorities had managed to get the virus under control at the end of June, adding that the hospitalization rate, which remained low until the end of August, gave a false sense of security despite cases already high at the time.
He said: “Then there was a week when temperatures dropped in September and all the indicators went in the wrong direction again across Europe. The virus spreads best in the cold because we spend most of our time indoors.”
After reaching a peak of 32,292 infections on April 14, when France was implementing some of the strictest lockdown measures in Europe, the number of hospitalized Covid-19 patients dropped to 4,530 on August 29.
After increasing daily cases by more than 700 cases over the past four days, the number in hospitals now stands at 14,032, a level that had not been seen in the country since early June.
“Hospitals and their staff will find themselves in a situation that they already know,” Fontane said, referring to the peak of late March and early April, when the hospital system was on the brink of collapse.
“We have many tools to protect ourselves from the virus, but we are facing a difficult period,” he added, echoing Prime Minister Jean Castex’s expectations that France will face difficulties in November, as he explained the new curfew measures.
Like other health experts, Fontane said the containment measures will take about two weeks before they pay off.
