An AFP journalist reported that protesters, including families accompanying the children, as well as young men and women in black hoods and masks, moved through central Nicosia, blocking traffic on several main streets.
The organizers of the protest were from the left, anti-fascist activists and unions, and they called on social networks to organize the demonstration to say “enough” with “state tyranny”, “failed management of the epidemic” and “corruption”.
Some protesters beat drums and chanted in front of dozens of police in riot gear, while others carried large black signs that read in Greek: “We must take to the streets to fight fear.”
Police responded with water cannons and tear gas to disperse the gathering, prohibited by coronavirus restrictions.
Police told AFP that ten people were arrested for causing “fights and riots” at the protest, which was carried out in defiance of the Corona virus restrictions.
He explained that six people were fined for violating COVID-19-related gathering restrictions.
