The president of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, was fined $ 3,500 for appearing in a selfie without a muzzle, in what was considered a violation of the precautionary measures imposed by the country in an attempt to stop the spread of the Corona virus. Reuters reported that the president apologized after the photo was released on social media.

Chile enforces strict rules for the use of masks in all public places, and violations carry penalties that include fines and even prison terms.

Piñera explained that he was walking alone on the beach near his home in the coastal town of Cacagua in Chile, when a woman approached him and asked for a photo with him.

The selfie shows the president and the woman standing together on a sunny day, without a muzzle.

The virus peaked in Chile in May and June, during the southern hemisphere winter, and then decreased until November. Cases are on the rise again, leading to restrictions and new quarantines.

Chile has reported 581,135 cases of the virus since the outbreak began in March and 16,051 deaths from the disease.
