Abolition of school support from schools

Faten Hajj wrote in “Al-Akhbar”:

More than 220 teachers will be spent by the end of this December, after the leadership of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) canceled the school support program that had been in place for 12 years.

The stated excuse is lack of funding, says Hassan Al-Sayed, a program officer at Ain El-Helweh camp and a member of the Teachers Union. It explains the tasks of the project, which are to provide educational assistance to people with special needs and learning difficulties, from elementary school to high school, and to provide kindergarten students with pre-learning skills. With Corona, new tasks have been added, among which are the development of some 500 educational videos for use in distance education, in addition to acting as a health guide by monitoring the implementation of the health protocol established by the Ministry of Education and UNICEF, measure the temperature of students and follow up on all cases of health and those with chronic diseases. According to Al-Sayed, the program, which directly accompanies more than 5,000 students and provides education and awareness services to some 25,000 students, has succeeded in reducing dropout rates from UNRWA schools. Al-Sayed indicated that the exchange will cause a social and humanitarian crisis; Teachers who started as volunteers in the program and who, in recent years, receive half their salary full-time, are now on the streets with their families.

The Lebanese Teachers Union had organized a sit-in yesterday to protest the cancellation of the program, threatening to close schools and hold everyone who participated in issuing the decision accountable, if the agency did not back down.

On the other hand, the Union is following up on the issue of urban education in the Crown era and UNRWA’s non-compliance with social distancing standards in 72 schools affiliated with it in Palestinian camps and meetings, from Tire to Nahr al Bared, as if 26 students were sitting in a 42 square meter classroom, or in the best of cases 22 students in a space no larger than 48 square meters, highlighting that the number specified by the Ministry of Education is 18 students in an area not less than 60 square meters. The Union contacted the Ministry’s hotline to put it in the context of what is happening in UNRWA schools.

As a result of the divergence, the agency has incorporated 81 new day-to-day teachers alone, while the need, according to Union sources, exceeds 140 teachers.

The sources that do not hide their concern about the increase in Corona’s injuries spoke of an educational aspect that is no less dangerous, since the obsession with reducing the number of teachers led the UNRWA administration to assign the physics subject to level secondary, for example, to a life science teacher, a history teacher to an Arabic language teacher, and an Arabic language teacher to a religion teacher. .
