The CBC channel said that a Canadian court initiated legal proceedings for an Iraqi who kidnapped his daughter in Canada and kept her in Iraq during the summer of 2018.
The Canadian channel said in a report: “For more than two years, Zainab Mahdi, who lives in Caligari, Canada, did not see her daughter Zahra Al-Azzawi, after her father took her, Ali, and traveled with she on vacation to Egypt in 2018, then found out that her daughter is in Iraq and not Egypt. “
According to the channel, Zainab separated from her husband, Ali Al-Azawi, in 2017, after she said that her husband abused her physically and psychologically, and asked the court to protect her.
A year later, the father asked to accompany his 11-year-old daughter Zahra on a trip to Egypt from June 16 to September 5, and the mother signed a document allowing her to do so.
On September 5, Zahra did not return to Canada and the mother learned that her daughter was not in Egypt, but in Iraq, and requested to return her daughter, but since then all diplomatic and legal efforts have failed.
In April 2019, the father returned to Canada alone without his daughter, and was arrested at Toronto Pearson International Airport, with his attorney confirming that his daughter did not want to return to Canada and could not force her.
During court sessions, several judges attempted to impose conditions on Al-Azzawi in an effort to facilitate the boy’s return to Canada, but all failed.
