Brazilian authorities announced the opening of an investigation into the scandal of injecting Brazilians with false injections of the emerging corona virus as part of the vaccination campaign launched by the country.

The British newspaper “The Guardian” reported in a report that the police were investigating accusations of health workers deliberately injecting false people.

The false injections were denounced in three Brazilian states in a scandal called by local media Wind Vaccinations “airborne vaccines.”

According to the report, authorities are investigating the scandal amid speculation that those involved are supporters of anti-vaccination conspiracy theories or that they are selling vaccines on the black market.

The report quoted Carla Domingues, a Brazilian epidemiologist, as saying that the matter is not an isolated case and that the detection of empty syringes in various places is concerning.

Rio State Police, one of the states that witnessed the provision of blank injections, said the embezzlement charges carry a sentence of up to 12 years in prison.

A video posted by local media shows a nurse injecting an empty syringe into the arm of a 94-year-old woman at a car vaccination site in Petropolis.

After the video was released, which was recorded by a relative of the woman, the nurse was fired and investigations were initiated by the municipality, the regional nursing council and the local police.

The doubts are increased by the more than 10 years of experience of the nurse in the profession.

The country’s vaccination campaign faces many problems, including fraud and misinformation, and is also proceeding at a slow pace, with just over 2 percent of the 212 million population receiving the first dose of the vaccine against the Coronavirus, one month after the launch of the national campaign.

About 5.2 million people received the first dose of the vaccine in the second most affected country by the virus, with about 240,000 deaths.

Only 12 million doses were provided to start the vaccination campaign. The government expects to receive 210.4 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine by the end of the year and 100 million doses of Koronavac by the end of August.
